Alberta’s newly minted United Conservative Party government is under fire from media and LGBT activists for the demise of an NDP ad hoc group tasked with advising the former health minister on banning so-called conversion therapy. Such therapy aims to help individuals overcome unwanted same-sex attraction or gender confusion, and though evidence exists it does much good, the nearly universally accepted view now advanced in Canada by media, LGBT activists, and healthcare professionals are that it is a harmful pseudo-science. It is sometimes called reparative therapy. Ontario, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia have all outlawed therapists helping people overcome such unwanted feelings, and B.C.’s Green Party leader Andrew Weaver introduced similar legislation on Monday. A so-called "human rights tribunal" in Canada has just ruled that a Christian activist must pay $55,000 to a provincial politician because he referred to this politician as a "biological male" in a political pamphlet. The politician in question, Morgane Oger (born Ronan Oger), is a biological male. However, he has since "transitioned," and is living his life as a "transgender woman." According to the decision, Bill Whatcott must compensate Oger for injuring the latter's "dignity, feelings, and self-respect." The terrifying precedent set by this case can be illustrated by one, flabbergasting fact: The judge in the case refused to allow Whatcott's lawyer to offer testimony showing that, in point of fact, Oger is a biological male. Not only conservative organizations, but even feminists and one homosexual activist are warning against House Democrats’ “Equality Act,” which they fear will squelch free speech and endanger religious freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel is commonly credited with defining the philosophical structure called dialectic. While I make no claim to be a serious student of Hegel or of philosophy in general, I think I understand the basics of dialectic reasoning enough to refer to its effect on our culture. In simple terms, the system suggests that cultures evolve through a pattern like this: Thesis (a new idea) --> antithesis (opposition to the new idea) --> synthesis (compromise). (No doubt some will call this an oversimplification of the process. But I believe it accurately depicts cultural evolution.) In our nation’s history, we can see examples of this dialectic process bringing about positive change. The abolition of slavery quickly comes to mind. But not all new ideas are worth pursuing. As a former area high school student continues to fight the matter in court, a school board in Virginia says it’s holding off implementation of a new policy to force students to share restrooms with members of the opposite sex. Gavin Grimm is a female Gloucester High School graduate who “identifies” as male and has been the face of one of the country’s most high-profile transgender bathroom lawsuits since 2014. The Gloucester County School Board originally attempted to accommodate her request by letting her use a private restroom, but Grimm demanded access to the same restrooms used by male students. District Judge Arenda Wright Allen sided with Grimm last May , ruling that the policy “classified Mr. Grimm differently on the basis of his transgender status and, accordingly, subjected him to sex stereotyping.” The year before, the U.S. Supreme Court had decided not to hear the case.
