Confused Exodus International leader doesn't believe scripture?

Image
The leader of a renowned ministry dedicated to helping those with same-sex attractions leave the homosexual lifestyle has done an about-face, apologizing to the gay community and announcing his ministry will be closing down. Alan Chambers , 41, announced on Lisa Ling ’s “Our America” program on the Oprah Winfrey network that he is “deeply sorry” for his involvement in promoting reparative therapies aimed at changing sexual preferences. He now denounces reparative therapy as damaging and traumatic. Just hours after Chambers’s apology was made public, Exodus International announced it would close its doors after three decades of ministry. “Exodus is an institution in the conservative Christian world, but we’ve ceased to be a living, breathing organism,” Chambers said in a statement announcing the group’s disbanding. “For quite some time we’ve been imprisoned in a worldview that’s neither honoring toward our fellow human beings, nor biblical.” “For these reasons,” wrote Chambers, “t

Gay groups: Google Plus, iTunes must censor Christian smartphone app to cure homosexuality

Homosexual lobby groups are outraged at Google for having an app that claims to be able to cure unwanted same-sex attraction in 60 days , available at its Google Play online store. The self-help app is from the organization called Setting Captives Free , which produces a series of interactive courses that deal with addictive behaviors including sexual impurity, overeating, substance abuse, gambling, and smoking. The group claims to have helped over half-a-million people overcome unwanted habits. The contentious app is called Door of Hope. "You have arrived at the Door of Hope, the 60-day interactive course that will teach you to enjoy a newfound relationship with the Lord and how to find freedom from homosexuality. It is possible, and you can learn how," the brief description of the app states. PinkNews reported that a homosexual group calling itself Gaylesta (The LGBTQ Psychotherapist Association of the Greater San Francisco Bay Area ) sent a statement to Google co

Homosexual propaganda

English: James Dobson. (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) The movie “ For the Bible tells me so ” ( forthebibletellsmeso.org ) was shown in my home community of Flint, Michigan in the fall of 2008 as part of a series of gay events called “Out’N About.” Although the movie was billed as a documentary, it was first and foremost a gay propaganda film. The movie has two distinct elements to it. The documentary element examines the lives of five homosexuals and how their immediate families responded to their homosexuality. That part of the movie is actually a documentary, interesting, emotionally moving, and somewhat objective. The other part of the movie is pure gay political propaganda arranged to disparage conservative Christians and present the gay political movement as the enlightened possessors of the real truth about homosexuality. From my observations as a scholar on the gay political movement this movie has the imprint of the gay political organization known as Soulforce ( www.sou

Exodus International Fragments Over Focus

Christianity Today: Ex-gay coalition shifts from reparative therapy to discipleship after losing prominent partners. When California became the first state to ban reparative therapy for minors this fall, the public scrutiny of the treatment drew attention to Exodus International , the nation's largest ex-gay ministry . But Exodus had already stopped promoting the practice, saying it was largely ineffective. Exodus's shift on reparative therapy has been only one of several therapeutic and theological controversies that divided the ministry this year. Top leaders and dozens of affiliate ministries have defected from the 37-year-old umbrella ministry as it has attempted to reshape its mission and public image. Board member John Warren, a 53-year-old Florida banker who publicly defended Exodus president Alan Chambers in the face of this summer's criticism, reversed course and parted ways with the Orlando, Florida, ministry in September. Warren said he became uncomfortable w

‘Guilty as charged’: Chick-Fil-A owner stands by true marriage stance

ATLANTA, Georgia , July 18, 2012 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – The Baptist president of fast food chain Chick-Fil-A is facing renewed claims of “homophobia” after confirming his organization’s stance against same-sex “marriage.” “Guilty as charged,” Dan Cathy told the Baptist Press on Monday of his company’s support for the traditional family. Dan Cathy “We are very much supportive of the family—the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business , a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that,” said Cathy, whose father started the business in 1946. Homosexual activists have been calling for boycotts against the chain, which operates 1,608 restaurants across the U.S. with annual sales last year in excess of $4 billion, because it has made substantial corporate donations to pro-family groups. Earlier this year, college activists launched a petition calling for the chain to be removed from campuses across the c

Exodus and Confused Theology

Image
Exodus International (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) In recent weeks the leadership at Exodus International , an international Christian ministry that reaches out to those struggling with same-sex attraction , has distanced itself from so-called reparative or "conversion" therapy. Now, a Christian theologian is calling for the removal of Alan Chambers , the president of Exodus. Professor Robert Gagnon, an associate professor at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary , recently said Chambers is offering false hope to gays and lesbians by stating that their salvation is assured. Gagnon cites a 2011 interview with journalist Lisa Ling where Chambers said "people living an active gay Christian life will be in heaven with me if they have a relationship with Jesus Christ ." Gagnon added that Chambers made similar remarks when he spoke with the Gay Christian Network Conference in January 2012. In a 35-page article on Chambers, Gagnon said, "Alan's approach of provid

Can Christians embrace a same-sex lifestyle and still be members in good standing in a Christian church?

Exodus International (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) Can Christians embrace a same-sex lifestyle and still be members in good standing in a Christian church ? I've been asked to comment on the  controversy  provoked by a recent interview in the  Atlantic  with Alan Chambers , the president of Exodus International —an evangelical ministry founded to help Christians and non-Christians find freedom from the guilt and power of a same-sex lifestyle. Christians may debate public policy, but in this interview, Chambers raises issues that are very clearly addressed in Scripture . Especially when we are dealing with human lives, daring to draw our counsel from God , we need to affirm the simplicity of biblical teaching on the subject while rejecting an over-simplifying of the issues involved. The problem (sin and death) as well as the solution (redemption in Christ through the gospel) are simple, but hardly simplistic. In terms of sin, Scripture is quite clear about the condit
