ROCKVILLE, MD ,  -  Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays ( PFOX ) has filed a sexual orientation discrimination  complaint  with the Department of Justice and the Department of Education against the Montgomery County, Maryland , Board of Education and its School Superintendent , Joshua Starr. PFOX requests the federal agencies initiate an investigation into the discriminatory practices of Superintendent Starr and the Montgomery County school board and to oversee a remedial program to ensure diversity and non-discrimination against ex-gays.  "Starr misused his official position as school superintendent to gain access to students and indoctrinate them with his prejudicial bias against the ex-gay community," said Regina Griggs, executive director of PFOX. "The Department of Justice has investigated complaints against schools for discriminating against  transgenders  -- those who have changed their gender identity. The ex-gay community - those who have

Surrey school board ramps up pro-homosexual policy

Image
SURREY, British Columbia ,  – The Surrey School Board has  tightened up  its newly minted “Safe and caring schools” policy with what it calls a “statement of values” that “underscores” its commitment to “eliminating discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.” In the amendment to its June “anti-discrimination” policy, the Surrey school district will now “not permit or tolerate any homophobic and/or transphobic behavior such as harassment, intimidation, discrimination or bullying, whether by commission or by failing to act to end such behaviour.” The district justified the new policy this summer, stating that it “recognizes that school community members identifying (either publicly or privately) as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, two-spirit, intersex, queer or questioning ( LGBTQ ) face a unique set of challenges within schools and communities.” It was only a little more than a decade ago that the Surrey School Board  went to bat  in the cou

Toronto District School Board opens its first co-ed washroom

An “alternative” school dedicated to “equity” issues has opened the Toronto District School Board ’s first co-ed washroom . Intended primarily for students identifying as “transgender,” the washroom was set up after a petition by grade 8 students that cited last year’s passage of Bill 33, which enshrined protections based on “ gender identity ” and “gender expression” in Ontario. The school board unveiled the washroom at City View Alternative Senior School on Friday in a sign-hanging ceremony, according to the Toronto Star . City View caters to Grade 7 and 8 students and is dedicated to “peace and social justice,” teaching the curriculum “through the lens of race, class, gender, sexuality, and ability.” Its website says there are 64 students and four teachers. Ryan Bird, a spokesman for the Toronto District School Board, told LifeSiteNews that the washroom has two stalls, meaning that it would be a shared space for boys and girls. ACLU threatens to sue after Pennsylvania school board blocks Gay-Straight Alliance club

CHAMBERSBURG, PA , March 20, 2013 ( LifeSiteNews ) – The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is threatening a Pennsylvania school district with legal action after the school board voted 5-4 to block the formation of a “ Gay-Straight Alliance ” (GSA) at a local high school.  The ACLU gave the Chambersburg Area School District a Wednesday deadline to reverse its decision before the ACLU moved forward with the suit.  But on early Wednesday afternoon, a district representative who asked not to be named told LifeSiteNews by phone that the original decision to bar the club still stands.  As to whether the school board might yet change their minds in the face of legal action, the employee said, “No decision has been made at this time.” The ACLU of Pennsylvania and homosexual advocacy group Equality PA originally wrote to the district on March 12 demanding they reverse their decision within three days, or be sued in federal court. According to Witold Walczak , ACLU-PA lega

‘Transgender’ teen girl wins access to boy’s high school bathroom

NEWCASTLE, Ontario ,  – A girl who identifies herself as a boy has been given permission to use the boy’s bathroom at her Ontario public high school . Sixteen-year-old ‘James’ Spencer decided to change schools after she began dressing and acting like a boy. Officials at Clarke High School in Durham Region were at first reluctant to let the biological girl into the boy’s room, asking James to use a private washroom that required a key from the main office.  But James started a school-wide petition that eventually swayed the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board to let her have her way. “We decided it would be most appropriate ... and that’s the direction we’ve taken,”  said  Martin Twiss, the board’s superintendent of education to The Star. The School’s dress code policy  states  that students are to dress “neatly, in good taste, and in a manner which is appropriate for the school, workplace or an out-of-school activity.” Pro-family leaders  warned  earlier this yea

BERKELEY, September 19, 2012, ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – A former Marine’s views about the sanctity of marriage have cost him a job as superintendent of schools in Berkeley, California . Dr. Edmond Heatley withdrew after it became known he supported marriage. Dr. Edmond Heatley, who is African-American, had already been selected as the final candidate and resigned his position as a superintendent in Georgia when news broke that in 2008 he supported  Proposition 8 , a pro-marriage state ballot initiative  adopted by California voters  that November. “The Berkeley School Board is engaging in blatant viewpoint discrimination by declining to hire an otherwise well-qualified candidate for School Superintendent , just because he supported Prop 8 ,” Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse , the founder of  The Ruth Institute , wrote in a statement e-mailed to LifeSiteNews.com. Local media found  a copy of a memo  Dr. Heatley wrote when he led the Chino Valley Unified School District , which oppos

Education Minister supports school boards in refusing parents’ right to pull kids from sex classes which includes graphic homosexuality

TORONTO, Sept. 12, 2012 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) – As a Hamilton father  fights his school board  in court for the right to protect his children from classes on sexuality that he considers objectionable, Ontario’s Education Minister is backing the board. In a statement to LifeSiteNews about whether she supports the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board ’s decision to forbid religious accommodation to students seeking to withdraw from classes dealing with homosexuality, Education Minister Laurel Broten says school boards may refuse parents’ requests for religious accommodation if they deem fit. Education Minister Laurel Broten “Boards have the autonomy and flexibility to make accommodations based on individual requests, on a case by case basis,” Broten  told LifeSiteNews Tuesday afternoon. “We will continue to support a province-wide curriculum, and local approaches to religious accommodation.” Some pro-family leaders are questioning the government’s motives, however, noti

English: Sweden. Stockholm County. Nynäshamn (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) LONDON , July 27, 2012  — A Swedish high-school student recently failed a biology class for saying that homosexuality is abnormal, according to Swedish national news-site , svt.se. The site  reports  that a grade 8 student at Nynäshamn Highschool in Stockholm County , Sweden , expressed the opinion that homosexuality was “onormalt” — literally “abnormal” — and, as a result, received a failing grade. When the student questioned the grade, the teacher reportedly replied that it was because of the student’s opinions. The goal of the school’s curriculum, the teacher said, was that students show respect for different sexual orientations , and the student’s views did not correspond with that goal. Any expert in biology would clearly understand the design and function of biological sexual organs, that match and perform a biological function. For the penis to be inserted in the male anus (the organ used to d

Ontario high school selects ‘transgender’ man as prom queen

TRENTON, Ontario, July 5, 2012 ( LifeSiteNews.com ) - At their graduation prom on June 22, attendees at  Trenton High School  voted an 18-year-old man who now lives as a woman to be this year’s prom queen . Connor Ferguson, who said he was “really surprised” at being made prom queen, told  the Trentonian , “I’ve lived as I am for four years now, so I believe the ‘shock value’ is gone and most people just accept me for me.” He had high praise for his school which he said is very tolerant of homosexual and transgendered students, attributing this to the anti-bullying campaign the school holds annually. “It took some time for quite a few people, but the school and staff definitely helped with that, and my group of friends was endlessly supportive. I think people accept you a lot more when you stick up for yourself and have enough confidence to be yourself,” Ferguson said. Asked what he would advise people who he described as “trans-phobic,” Connor said, “I would want to tell them
