A Gay Writer Who Forgot Almost Everything Jesus Said

Image
The statement was so remarkable I had to read it several times before I was sure my eyes were not deceiving me. It turns out the author meant exactly what he wrote, namely that, “Only once in the recorded life of Jesus does he lay upon the human a requirement.” Yes, this is the stated opinion of Jonathan, writing on Medium. He quotes the words of Jesus, in John 13:34, “I give you a new commandment, to love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” And he notes that Jesus reaffirmed this in John 15:12: “My commandment is this — to love one another just as I have loved you.” Writes Jonathan, “The ‘commandment’ is singular. That means there’s one.” He finds affirmation for this position in the writings of Paul (Galatians 5:6) and John (1 John 3:11, 3:23, 4:7, 4:11, 4:12; cf. 2 Jn 6), adding his own (quite bizarre) interpretations to a number of biblical texts along the way. His thesis, described in the title and subtitle of his article (which i

Sweden’s Lutheran church ‘queers’ Jesus and the Bible for LGBT kids

Image
A diocese in the Lutheran Church of Sweden is offering a guide to LGBT young people that claims that because the word “homosexuality” is not specifically mentioned in the Bible the gay lifestyle is acceptable for Christians. A “survival guide for Christian queer kids” was developed by the Västerås diocese of the Church of Sweden. The official church website welcomes readers with “Under the rainbow, you are not alone!” and notes that the guide, developed by the Västerås diocese, pins together with the broader Swedish church’s “Young Camelot's rainbow camp.” The website offers 10 points, in English and Swedish, that refer to the survival guide for young Christians experiencing same-sex attractions. The objective is to help “young Christian people who, in the LGBT context, are asked about their Christian faith and who are questioned in Christian contexts about their LGBTQ identity.” Offering “theological interpretations” that it says are important to LGBTQ people who want to

Lauren Daigle - the Bible and the sin of homosexuality

Image
Once again, the Christian world is abuzz with controversy over the Bible and homosexual practice, as if this was a difficult or ambiguous subject. To the contrary, the Scriptures are totally clear: homosexual practice is sinful in God’s sight, but it is not the unforgivable sin. Here’s a brief primer, along with some helpful resources. A Dozen Quick Facts 1) Every single reference to homosexual practice in the Bible is categorically negative. 2) There is not one positive reference to homosexual practice in the Bible nor one positive example of a homosexual relationship. 3) There is not one single archeological or textual or linguistic discovery that has been made in the last 50 or 100 years that would alter our understanding of the Bible and homosexuality. 4) When Moses condemned homosexual practice, it was not for Israel alone (in contrast, say, with the food laws). Instead, it was unlawful for the Israelites because it was unlawful for all. 5) Although Jesus did not need to clari

‘Jesus Never Mentioned Homosexuality!’ Why Not?

Image
“Jesus never mentioned homosexuality!” That often-heard statement is one of the quickest and most common excuses people give for approving homosexual practice. Does it hold any weight biblically, though? And if it is true that Jesus never mentioned it, does that really justify such behavior? The answer is “no” to both questions. Here’s why. He Didn’t Need to Say It For It To Be True Jesus didn’t mention any number of sins. For example, He never mentioned child sexual abuse or wife beating. Does that mean He was okay with them? Jesus didn’t need to comment on such behavior. In the first century Judaism, there was no debate about its sinfulness. He would have been preaching to the choir. The “Jesus never mentioned it” argument assumes that only the words of Jesus are divinely inspired. It’s a “biblical” argument that ignores the rest of the Bible. It also ignores Jesus’ own witness to the divine origin of Scripture ( Mark 12:35-36 ). Most of what Jesus said wasn’t even recorded in

Science and Bible dismiss pro-gay arguments

Image
This three-part series will address the pro-gay theology by dividing its arguments--or tenets--into three categories: social justice arguments, general religious arguments, and scriptural arguments. A brief description of these arguments will be provided, followed by a response/rebuttal to each. Major denominations ordaining homosexuals, priests and clergy presiding over same-sex weddings, sanctuaries invaded by boisterous gay activists, debates over homosexuality ripping congregations apart-who would have guessed we would ever reach such a point in church history? A vigorous debate between Christians and homosexuals shouldn't be surprising in and of itself. If author and commentator Dr. Dennis Praeger are right when he says the Judeo-Christian ethic is responsible for the Western World's disapproval of homosexuality,[1] then conflicts between the Church and the gay rights movement are not only understandable, they are inevitable. (While acceptance of homosexuality in
