The Hatmaker Position on LGBTQ

Image
In an effort to be compassionate and loving, popular Christian author Jen Hatmaker came out in support of LGBT relationships , referring to them as “holy.” While other Christian influencers have come out in favor of affirming theology, this caught my attention because many have benefitted greatly from her books. Rosaria Butterfield wrote a poignant reply to Jen Hatmaker, which is worth reading, regardless of where you stand on the issue. And so have Jake Meador and Kevin DeYoung . The issue seemed closed to me, until a close friend sent me a link to a Facebook post by Jen’s husband Brandon Hatmaker , clarifying their position on LGBTQ . This particular post needs to be addressed.  Essentially, Brandon describes how he and Jen have been on a yearlong journey trying to reconcile the pain they see in the lives of LGBTQ people with the “historic Christian position” on homosexuality. After much study and prayer, they mutually concluded that God blesses homosexual relationships in

The Bible condemns the sin of Homosexuality

Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God ? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9–10)   But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous man, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching. (1 Timothy 1:8–10) The apostle Paul wrote to a number of Christian congregations spread across the Roman empire . As he addressed the many issues facing the primitive church, he was bound to address the topic of morality, especially when writing to those churches in ci

HOMOSEXUALITY … CONSISTENT WITH THE BIBLE?

As noted above, however, this clamor for the acceptability of homosexuality, which is heard even in the church, is not without a stated authoritative base. The people making this claim appeal to the Bible and assert that a homosexual lifestyle is perfectly compatible with its teaching. The same-sex controversy is, at its core, a controversy over the authority and interpretation of the Bible. Throughout the history of the church, and revealed in the historical understanding of Scripture,5 homosexuality has been seen as contrary to the morality set forth in the pages of the Bible. Today, however, we are being told that the moral opposition to homosexuality, based in and upon Scripture, is actually a rather recent phenomenon. We are being “informed” that the Bible nowhere condemns homosexuality as it is predominantly known and practiced today and that, as a matter of fact, a lifestyle of committed homosexuality is consistent with biblical morality. Ironically, this makes for a remar

What the Bibles closely says about homosexuality

So one can readily see that  Rogers tends to avoid remarks from scholars who agree with his overall stance regarding support for homosexual unions but who also disagree with his central conclusion that “the Bible [does not] condemn all homosexual relationships”  (p. 70).  One can understand why: Such literature seriously undermines the appearance that Rogers wants to give; namely, that there is a united front among pro-homosex scholars regarding the assertion that “the Bible does not condemn all homosexual relationships.” In fact, the majority of the best pro-homosex scholars acknowledge the precise opposite: Scripture does condemn all homosexual relationships. In not letting readers know this, Rogers is not acting as an honest scholar.  It is also  in stark contrast to his eagerness to let readers know when scholars who are not affirming of homosexual practice agree with the way that Rogers wants to interpret a given text .  For example, Rogers is eager to cite Mario

You know who’s not happy about Sulu being turned gay? George Takei, the gay activist

Image
The homosexual actor who played Star Trek character Hikaru Sulu on TV and in film is unhappy the latest movie makes the character homosexual, even though the writers intended it as a tribute to him. “I think it’s very unfortunate,” the original Sulu, George Takei, told the Hollywood Reporter, adding that he felt it sent the wrong message about sexuality, that a person could be homosexual at one point in his life and heterosexual in another. Takei revealed he had told both Pegg and the new movie’s director Justin Lin he wanted no such tribute. “I told him, ‘Be imaginative and create a character who has a history of being gay, rather than Sulu, who had been straight all this time, suddenly being revealed as being closeted.’” So embarrassed is co-screenwriter Simon Pegg, who also plays Scotty in the series of remakes, that he issued a formal statement, even resorting to the shakey multiverse theory to argue there was room for both his storyline and that preferred by Takei. “

What the Bible says about homosexuality

The Bible doesn't speak of homosexuality very often; but when it does, it condemns it as sin . Let's take a look. Leviticus 18:22 , "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination." 1 Leviticus 20:13 , "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them." 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 , "Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God." Romans 1:26-28 , "For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natur
