A Lawyer Abandoning His Clients It wasn't really a total surprise when the news came out this week that Virginia's new Attorney General , Mark Herring , has decided not to defend Virginia's marriage law against legal challenge. We've long suspected Herring to be on the side of radical redefinition of marriage , even though he said in his campaign that he would defend the amendment. The headlines nonetheless gave a cold shock. Particularly the one from  USA Today  which read, " Virginia won't defend its same-sex marriage ban. " Well, leaving aside the cynicism or agenda-driven bias that goes into calling laws such as Virginia's marriage amendment "same-sex marriage bans," the headline nonetheless hits upon the real travesty here. Mark Herring is Virginia's Attorney General. He is duty-bound to defend Virginia's laws. Now they have found a county clerk willing to defy the Governor and Attorney General by issuing illegal 'marriage' licenses to same-sex couples. It was reported yesterday that Dona Ana County Clerk , Lynn Ellins will start issuing same-sex 'marriage' licenses, against the express directive of the Attorney General. In June, Attorney General King issued a position paper stating same sex marriages are illegal in New Mexico and asked clerks to not begin issuing such 'licenses.' Nevertheless, the Attorney General refuses to put a stop to the issuance of these illegal documents, and that is why the Governor must act right away. Our expectations have certainly been met; over a dozen such lawsuits have now been filed. What saddens me most about these lawsuits is that some of our elected officials entrusted with defending the laws of the land have chosen to abandon their oaths of office and state law on marriage. In fact, the Attorneys General of both Illinois and Pennsylvania have declared that they will not defend marriage in federal court. An elderly florist in Washington state has filed a countersuit against the state Attorney General  after being sued  for refusing to sell flowers for a same-sex "wedding." AG Bob Ferguson says shop-owner Barronelle Stutzman, 68, is guilty of unlawful discrimination for refusing to sell flowers to long-time customer Robert Ingersoll for his same-sex “marriage” ceremony. Stutzman refused her services in this instance because she it would violate her religious beliefs. Barronelle Stutzman Although she provides referrals to other florists who will provide services for same-sex “marriage” ceremonies, lawsuits allege that Stutzman is unlawfully discriminating against customers based on sexual orientation. The state is seeking $2,000 per offense and a permanent injunction that would require the shop to violate its conscience or stop selling flowers for wedding ceremonies altogether.
