Alberta NDP Education Minister Dave Eggen has slammed Jason Kenney ’s defence of parental rights as “extremist.” Kenney, newly elected leader of the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party , told  Postmedia’s  editorial board Tuesday he would not repeal Bill 10, which mandates schools must provide pro-homosexual gay-straight alliance (GSA) clubs if a student requests it. "I do, however, think that parents have a right to know what's going on with their kids in the schools unless the parents are abusive," added Kenney. “I don’t think it’s right to keep secrets from parents about challenges their kids are going through.” The education system “should be predicated on the presumption that the vast majority of parents are good, loving, caring people who have the best interests of their children at heart,” he said. Alberta ’s largest Christian home-schooling association has been effectively shut down by the province’s NDP government after it found what Education Minister David Eggen called a “fail[ure] to demonstrate accountability of funding received from the government of Alberta.” But the association is denying wrongdoing. “WISDOM/Trinity has been shut down by AB Education. They announced this with a press release filled with partial truths amounting to calumny,” the association stated in a press release on Tuesday. An ; audit by the ministry   found what it claimed to be various spending irregularities of taxpayer dollars. In Alberta, each home-schooled child under the wing of a private school such as WISDOM/Trinity is   allotted   $1,670 of taxpayer funds to cover learning expenses such as curriculum. Education Minister David Eggen says he’s willing to strip two Christian schools of their public funding if they won’t abandon their Christian principles and allow clubs promoting homosexuality and/or transgender students in washrooms of the opposite sex. These measures are part of the New Democratic government’s anti-bullying policies that single out sexual minorities for protection, though surveys indicate that physical appearance and grades are far more likely causes of school bullying. Last month, Spruce Grove Baptist pastor Brian Coldwell, who is also chairman of an independent Christian school board with two small schools with 200 students, said neither cross-gendered washrooms nor gay straight alliances would be allowed in his schools.
